Pigmeu is one of those addresses Lisbon locals like to keep for their friends. It's in Campo de Ourique, has a MICHELIN Guide Bib Gourmand and serves Portuguese cooking at prices that don't scare. If you want to eat well without ceremony or a heavy bill, you're in the right place.
The cooking and the experience
The subject here is Portuguese cooking, with flavours you recognise at first bite. The Bib Gourmand isn't a star, but it's a seal worth its weight in gold for travellers: the MICHELIN Guide gives it to places where you eat very well for a fair price. That's exactly what you want from an unhurried dinner in a new city. The menu changes, so ask what's good that day and go with it.
The room and the atmosphere
At a €€ price level, don't expect starched tablecloths or waiters in white gloves. It's a neighbourhood restaurant and you notice it in the best way: relaxed atmosphere, local people and conversation at the table. There's no dress code; come as you've been all day sightseeing. Expect a meal to match your hunger, for sharing or each with their own plate.
Campo de Ourique: a neighbourhood to stroll before and after
Campo de Ourique is Lisbon without the tourist filter: flat, tidy streets, local shops, pastry shops and terraces. The Campo de Ourique Market is a must for a look around and a drink. Casa Fernando Pessoa, where the poet spent his last years, is a few minutes' walk away. Also nearby is the Prazeres Cemetery, more beautiful and serene than its name suggests, next to the tram 28 terminus.
Heading down towards the river, the Estrela Basilica and the Jardim da Estrela, one of the city's most pleasant gardens, are right there. A good idea is to spend the afternoon between the garden and the market and end at Pigmeu for dinner. If you're coming from Amoreiras, it's close too.
