Contemporary cooking recommended by the MICHELIN Guide at the Locke de Santa Joana hotel, a former convent near Avenida da Liberdade.

Santa Joana is the restaurant of the Locke de Santa Joana hotel, set in a former convent on Rua de Santa Marta. It's recommended by the MICHELIN Guide and serves contemporary cooking in a relaxed, lively setting. Walls with centuries of history, today's cooking: a mix that works very well.

The cooking and the experience

The cooking is contemporary and starts from good produce, with dishes made for sharing and clean flavours, without needless complications. The menu follows the seasons, so ask what's featured that day. It's the kind of place where you order a bit of everything for the middle of the table and taste as you go.

Wine has its place too, which makes Santa Joana a good option both for dinner and for starting the night with a glass. If you have allergies or restrictions, mention them when you book.

A convent with a new life

The building is a restored former convent, and the restaurant makes good use of the setting, with a modern atmosphere that doesn't hide the place's history. The tone is informal and lively, without formality. The price level is €€, very reasonable for the quality and the space.

Expect a relaxed meal, good for long conversations. No need to dress up: come as you are, as long as you come hungry.

Santa Marta, the Avenida and Marquês

Santa Marta is in a central area between Avenida da Liberdade and Marquês de Pombal, away from the bustle of the most touristy streets but close to everything. Before dinner, you can walk down Avenida da Liberdade, with its shops and terraces, to Restauradores and Rossio.

In the other direction, Parque Eduardo VII gives a wide view over the city to the river. Viewpoint lovers can also climb to Torel, one of Lisbon's most hidden, or take the Lavra funicular, the oldest in the city.
