Suba

Contemporary · Santa Catarina · €€€

Contemporary cooking recommended by the MICHELIN Guide, at the Verride Palácio Santa Catarina hotel, in one of Lisbon's highest and prettiest spots.

Suba is the restaurant of Verride Palácio Santa Catarina, a palace at the top of the Santa Catarina hill. It's recommended by the MICHELIN Guide and serves contemporary cooking with a Portuguese base. The name gives a hint ("suba" means "go up"): here you climb, and the reward is one of the areas with the best views over the Tagus.

The cooking and the experience

The kitchen starts from Portuguese produce and treats it with modern technique, without losing the taste of home along the way. Dishes are carefully plated but not made just for the photo. The menu follows the seasons, so ask what's at its best that day. There's a good selection of Portuguese wines from several regions to go with it.

Service has the attentiveness of a boutique hotel, without stiffness. If you have allergies or dietary restrictions, mention them when you book: the team adapts well.

A palace with a view

The atmosphere is elegant and calm, in a historic building tastefully restored. The late-afternoon light in Santa Catarina is famous, and dining here comes with that bonus. It's a €€€ restaurant, ideal for eating well in a special setting without committing to a long tasting menu.

As for clothes, smart but relaxed fits perfectly. Expect an unhurried meal, ideal for a long conversation.

Santa Catarina and around

Right next door is the Santa Catarina viewpoint, with the Adamastor statue watching over the river and the 25 de Abril Bridge in the background. It's the classic spot for a sunset before dinner. A few steps away is the Bica funicular, which runs down one of Lisbon's most photographed streets towards Cais do Sodré.

In the other direction, Chiado and Bairro Alto are a short walk away, with shops, cafés and bookshops for the afternoon and bars for after the meal. The streets here are steep, so comfortable shoes are a good idea.
