Full description
Coimbra is the city where Portugal learned to think… and to sing. It was the country’s first capital, and one of Europe’s oldest universities still beats at its heart. Your local guide will show it to you, starting at the São Sebastião Aqueduct and passing the Arco da Traição and the Monumental Staircase before reaching the top of the university hill, a UNESCO World Heritage Site: the Porta Férrea, Via Latina, Torre da Cabra and the famous Joanina Library. You’ll learn about the black capes, Queima das Fitas and the Monumental Serenade, hear the story of Coimbra fado, sung by students, and descend the “backbreaker” Quebra Costas beside the Old Cathedral. We’ll pass Jardim da Manga, the Inquisition courtyard and the Church of Santa Cruz, with its convent sweets and the Miracle of the Roses. The tour ends by the Mondego River with Portugal’s most tragic love story: Pedro and Inês de Castro. How does it work? The €1.50 you pay when booking is just a booking fee: it reserves your place in the group but doesn’t go to the guide. The tour itself is pay-what-you-wish: at the end, you give your guide whatever you think they’ve earned. Most people leave €15–20 per person, but here the price is set by your smile, not a fixed fee.
