GOLD FAMILY TOURS/PEDRO FERRAZ HAS OVER 20 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE ORGANIZING TOURS. THIS CHURCH STANDS ON THE SITE WHERE SAINT ANTHONY WAS BORN, BEFORE HE SET OFF INTO THE WORLD AS A PREACHER, EVENTUALLY DYING IN PADUA. THE CURRENT TEMPLE WAS BUILT IN 1767, ON THE SITE OF A CHAPEL THAT HAD EXISTED SINCE THE 15TH CENTURY. NOTABLE FEATURES INCLUDE THE IMAGE OF THE PATRON SAINT, WHICH SURVIVED THE EARTHQUAKE; THE CRYPT AT HIS BIRTHPLACE; AND THE PAINTING DEPICTING SAINT ANTHONY WITH THE MOST AUTHENTIC FEATURES PRESERVED. IT WAS VISITED BY POPE SAINT JOHN PAUL II IN 1982. LISBON CATHEDRAL (OR THE BASILICA OF SAINT MARY MAJOR) IS THE OLDEST AND MOST IMPORTANT CHURCH IN THE PORTUGUESE CAPITAL. CONSTRUCTION BEGAN IN 1147, BY ORDER OF KING AFONSO HENRIQUES, AFTER THE CITY WAS CONQUERED FROM THE MOORS. LOCATED IN THE ICONIC ALFAMA DISTRICT, IT IS DISTINGUISHED BY ITS IMPOSING FACADE WITH TWO TOWERS THAT GIVE IT THE APPEARANCE OF A MEDIEVAL FORTRESS. THE MONASTERY OF SAINT MARY OF BELÉM, BETTER KNOWN AS JERÓNIMOS MONASTERY, IS A PORTUGUESE MONASTERY COMMISSIONED IN THE LATE 15TH CENTURY BY KING MANUEL I AND ENTRUSTED TO THE ORDER OF SAINT JEROME. IT IS LOCATED IN THE PARISH OF BELÉM, IN THE CITY AND MUNICIPALITY OF LISBON. SINCE 2016, IT HAS HELD THE STATUS OF A NATIONAL PANTHEON.
