Alleyways scented with grilled sardines, fado drifting from windows, and breathtaking viewpoints: discover Alfama through a local’s eyes. You book for €1.50, then decide what it’s worth at the end.

Fun fact: Alfama survived the 1755 earthquake almost intact thanks to the bedrock it sits on—which is why its alleyways still form a medieval maze.

Highlights

  • Get lost (with a guide) in Lisbon’s oldest neighborhood
  • Discover why fado and saudade are impossible to translate
  • Postcard-worthy views from Portas do Sol and Santa Luzia
  • Centuries of Jewish, Arab, and Christian history around every corner
  • End at the Cathedral with stories of Saint Anthony

Full description

Alfama isn’t a place you simply pass through: it’s a neighborhood to discover, corner by corner. It’s the oldest part of Lisbon, and the only one the 1755 earthquake couldn’t erase. Your local guide will open it up to you like a family album: from the curious Casa dos Bicos, with its diamond-pointed façade and its connection to Nobel Prize winner José Saramago, to the city’s oldest fountain and the alleyways of the former Jewish quarter. You’ll climb stairways where laundry hangs out to dry like flags, finally understand what saudade means and why fado sings of it better than anything else, and hear the stories behind the azulejos and the “weddings of Saint Anthony.” The reward for the uphill climbs: views from Portas do Sol and Santa Luzia, with the Tagus shimmering below. The tour ends at the Cathedral, with legends about Lisbon’s most beloved saint. How does it work? The €1.50 you pay when booking is just a booking fee: it secures your place in the group, but it doesn’t go to the guide. The tour itself is pay-what-you-wish: at the end, you give your guide whatever you think they’ve earned. Most people leave €15–€20 per person, but here, your smile sets the price—not a fixed fee.
