Alleys scented with sardines, fado drifting out of windows, and breathtaking viewpoints: discover Alfama with a local. Book for €1.50 and decide what it’s worth at the end.
Fun fact: Alfama survived the 1755 earthquake almost intact thanks to the bedrock it stands on—that’s why its layout is still a medieval maze.
Highlights
- Get lost (with a guide) in Lisbon’s oldest neighborhood
- Discover why fado and saudade don’t translate
- Picture-perfect views from Portas do Sol and Santa Luzia
- Centuries of Jewish, Arab, and Christian history on every corner
- Finish at the Cathedral with stories of Saint Anthony
Full description
Alfama isn’t a place you simply walk through—it’s a neighborhood you discover one corner at a time. It’s the oldest neighborhood in Lisbon, and the only one the 1755 earthquake couldn’t erase. Your local guide will open it up to you like a family photo album, from the curious Casa dos Bicos, with its diamond-pointed façade and ties to José Saramago, to the city’s oldest fountain and the streets of the former Jewish quarter. You’ll climb stairways where laundry hangs like flags, finally understand saudade and why fado sings it better than anyone, and uncover the stories behind the azulejos and the “Weddings of Saint Anthony.” Your reward for tackling the hills: views from Portas do Sol and Santa Luzia, with the Tagus glittering below. We’ll finish at the Cathedral, with tales of Lisbon’s most beloved saint. How does it work? The €1.50 you pay when booking is just a booking fee: it reserves your spot in the group, but doesn’t go to the guide. The tour itself is pay-what-you-wish: at the end, you give your guide whatever you think they’ve earned. Most people leave €15–20 per person, but here the price is set by your smile, not a fixed rate.
