THE SANCTUARY OF FÁTIMA, LOCATED IN COVA DA IRIA, PORTUGAL, IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT MARIAN SHRINES IN THE WORLD. THIS SITE OF DEEP CATHOLIC DEVOTION WAS ESTABLISHED IN MEMORY OF THE APPARITIONS OF OUR LADY TO THE THREE SHEPHERD CHILDREN—LÚCIA, FRANCISCO, AND JACINTA—which took place between May and October 1917. Today, it attracts around six million pilgrims and tourists every year. The Sanctuary of Fátima is, above all, a place of Christian pilgrimage and Catholic devotion, preserving the memory of the events that led to its founding, namely the 1917 apparitions of Our Lady to the three shepherd children—Lúcia dos Santos, Francisco, and Jacinta Marto. Its scale and religious significance are universally recognized, both nationally and internationally. CHAPEL OF THE APPARITIONS: The true heart of the sanctuary. Built in 1919 at the Virgin Mary’s request, it marks the exact spot where the holm oak stood beneath which Our Lady appeared. SUBERCO VIEWPOINT: Offers sweeping panoramic views of the beach, the town of Nazaré, and the Atlantic Ocean. SANCTUARY OF OUR LADY OF NAZARÉ: A late-17th-century church (with origins dating back to the 14th century) that houses the revered image of the Virgin. QUIQUO'S HOUSES HERMITAGE OF MEMORY: A small chapel connected to the 12th-century legend of Dom Fuas Roupinho. FORT OF SÃO MIGUEL ARCANJO AND LIGHTHOUSE: Located on the headland, it has become world-famous as a prime viewing spot for the giant waves at Praia do Norte (famous from November to February). FEW OTHER HISTORIC PLACES HAVE THIS: A charming town surrounded by its tall stone walls. A place with a life of its own. With many homes, shops, cafés, restaurants, hotels, churches, museums, and public services in operation… Despite the daily “invasion” of tourists, I highly recommend a visit. Take the opportunity to appreciate all the details that make this place unique: flowerpots on windowsills and large plants climbing the walls, houses painted in cheerful colors, and historic details that have remained intact for so many centuries. Picture-perfect nooks and crannies seem to go on forever.
