Fun fact: The best of Lisbon
Full description
Lisbon Cathedral, officially the Patriarchal Metropolitan Cathedral of Saint Mary Major, is the oldest cathedral in Lisbon. Construction began in 1147, and it has been a National Monument since 1910. Architectural styles: Romanesque (predominant), Gothic (cloister and ambulatory), Baroque (main chapel). This church stands on the site where Saint Anthony was born, before he set out to preach around the world and eventually died in Padua. The current church was built in 1767, on the site of a chapel that had stood there since the 15th century. Notable features include the statue of the patron saint, which survived the earthquake; the crypt at his birthplace; and a painting depicting Saint Anthony with the most authentic features preserved in any known likeness. Pope Saint John Paul II visited in 1982. Alfama is undoubtedly one of Lisbon’s most fascinating and traditional neighborhoods! The name Alfama comes from the Arabic “Alhama,” meaning thermal spring—a reminder of the neighborhood’s past role in supplying Lisbon with water. During the Muslim period, Lisbon was concentrated in Alfama’s narrow streets, stretching up the castle hillside. Once an upmarket area, Alfama became a neighborhood of fishermen and sailors, and survived the 1755 earthquake. Although no houses from the Muslim period remain in Alfama, the neighborhood still retains an Arabic layout and is full of narrow lanes and courtyards. Its picturesque, narrow streets form a maze of flower-filled courtyards, little stairways, and washing lines swaying in the breeze from the River Tagus, just across from Alfama. Mouraria takes its name from the fact that, after conquering Lisbon, King Afonso Henriques confined the city’s Muslim residents to this area. The Jews, meanwhile, were confined to the Castle neighborhoods. The earliest examples of Portuguese Mudéjar art originated here and in the surrounding neighborhoods, paving the way for the Manueline style.
