Almourol Castle Built on a granite outcrop 18 metres above the water, on a small island measuring 310 metres long and 75 metres wide, in the middle reaches of the Tagus River. During the Reconquista, it formed part of the so-called Tagus Line. It is one of the most representative examples of military architecture of the period, evoking both the early days of the Kingdom of Portugal and the Knights Templar, an association that enhances its aura of mystery and romance. The Convent of Christ (12th–18th centuries) Construction began in 1160 and is closely linked to the early days of the Kingdom of Portugal and the role played at the time by the Knights Templar, whose Portuguese headquarters were here. It was later redesigned and expanded by the Order of Christ, which succeeded the Templars. This architectural complex includes a variety of buildings, almost all of considerable heritage significance. Highlights include the castle and the Templar Charola, the 15th-century cloisters, the Manueline church and the Renaissance convent.
