Fun fact: People from Porto are called “tripeiros”: in 1415, they gave all their meat to the ships of Henry the Navigator and were left eating tripe.

Full description
Porto was born facing the river, and this tour takes you downhill from the heights of the Cathedral to the banks of the Douro, along the city’s oldest streets. Your local guide will tell you how a city ruled by bishops became a commercial powerhouse, what lies behind the Grilos Church and its 1730 tiles, and why cod is such a big deal in Porto: treaties with England, Portuguese princesses in Denmark, and the famous Gomes de Sá recipe. You’ll explore Miragaia, the sailors’ and shipyard workers’ neighborhood from which ships set sail for India and Brazil. You’ll look out over the Douro to learn about the world’s oldest officially demarcated wine region, then reach Infante Square, home to the Stock Exchange Palace and São Francisco Church. You’ll also discover why Porto’s residents are called “tripeiros.” We’ll finish by the D. Luís I Bridge, with stories of floods, rescues, and the legendary Duke of Ribeira. How does it work? The €1.50 you pay when booking is just a booking fee: it reserves your spot in the group, but it doesn’t go to the guide. The tour itself is pay-what-you-wish: at the end, you give your guide whatever you think they’ve earned. Most people leave €15–20 per person, but here the price is set by your smile, not a fixed fee.
