Canalha is one of those places you'd like to keep to yourself, but that would be selfish. It has a MICHELIN Guide Bib Gourmand, the distinction for places where you eat very well without breaking the bank. It's on Rua da Junqueira, on the way to Belém, and belongs to the Paradigma group, the same as Ofício.
Produce first, the rest follows
The philosophy is simple: from the land and the sea straight to the table. Produce rules, and the kitchen treats it with respect, without unnecessary frills. Expect frank Portuguese flavours, cooked with care and the generosity of people who like feeding others. The menu follows what the season and suppliers offer, so it's worth asking what's best that day.
It's the kind of meal for sharing and ordering one more dish just to try it. Add a Portuguese wine chosen with the team's help and you have a lunch or dinner that tastes of the real Lisbon.
The atmosphere and what to expect
The space is relaxed and full of life, more modern tasca than ceremonial dining room. People talk loudly, laugh and raise their glasses. No need to dress up: come as you are after a day of sightseeing. It's a €€ restaurant which, given the quality on the plate, explains the MICHELIN Guide distinction well.
As it's very popular with people who live in the city, tables go fast. At weekends especially, don't count on luck.
Junqueira and Belém: the day around the table
Rua da Junqueira links Alcântara to Belém and is lined with old mansions. Make Canalha the break in a day in Belém: in the morning, the Jerónimos Monastery and Belém Tower; after lunch, the MAAT and a walk along the Tagus. The pastéis de Belém are for dessert, of course, even if there's no room left.
If you come for dinner, enjoy the late afternoon by the river, at the Monument to the Discoveries or in the nearby gardens. Tram 15 passes close by and links the area to Praça do Comércio, saving your legs on the way back.
