O Frade is a slice of the Alentejo in Belém, a few minutes from Lisbon's most visited monuments. It's recommended by the MICHELIN Guide and serves regional Alentejo cooking with respect for tradition and a light modern touch. A small room, food with soul and a price that leaves room for one more glass.
The Alentejo at the table
Alentejo cooking is made of bread, olive oil, aromatic herbs, pork and plenty of patience at the stove. That's O Frade's foundation, served with care and without excess. Dishes are for sharing, and the fun is ordering several and tasting as you go. The menu changes with the season, so ask what's coming out best that day.
Alentejo wines are the natural partners for these flavours, and the house knows it. Ask the team for a suggestion: they usually get it right.
The room and what to expect
The space is small and informal, with the feel of a family home where people eat slowly and talk a lot. The price level is €€, making it one of the best-value options around Belém.
Being small, it fills up fast. Expect a relaxed, unhurried meal, but turning up without a booking is the quickest way to stay outside.
Belém before and after the meal
Calçada da Ajuda practically starts in Belém, so it's easy to fit O Frade into a day of monuments. In the morning, visit the Jerónimos Monastery and Belém Tower, pass by the Monument to the Discoveries and, of course, the pastéis de Belém queue. Then walk up the street hungry.
For the afternoon, there are museums for every taste: the Coach Museum is right there, the MAAT is by the river and, uphill, the Ajuda National Palace and the Ajuda Botanical Garden are worth a visit. Tram 15 links Belém to the city centre.
