Feitoria is the big meal of the day in Belém. It's in the Altis Belém Hotel, right by the Bom Sucesso dock, and holds a MICHELIN star. It's a restaurant to sit down in with time, let the kitchen lead and watch the Tagus outside.
The cooking and the experience
The cooking is modern, with refined technique and a firm footing in Portuguese produce. The name is no accident: feitorias were the Portuguese trading posts of the Age of Discovery, and Belém is precisely the neighbourhood of that story. Don't expect a fixed dish to order every time you come back. The offer changes and it's better to arrive with an open mind than a list of expectations. Here the pleasure lies in the whole: the pace, the details and the service.
The room and the atmosphere
The atmosphere is that of a fine hotel restaurant: elegant, calm, made for talking without raising your voice. The price level is €€€€, so expect an occasion meal rather than a quick lunch between monuments. At a starred restaurant the experience usually lasts several hours, especially if you choose a tasting menu. We can't confirm a dress code. Even so, smart clothes without being formal always fit. If you have dietary restrictions, say so when you book. The kitchen appreciates the notice.
Belém around the table
The location is gold for visitors. Belém Tower is practically next door, and a walk along the river takes you to the Monument to the Discoveries, the MAAT and, across the gardens, the Jerónimos Monastery. A good plan is to spend the afternoon seeing the sights, take the compulsory break for pastéis de Belém and end with a riverside stroll at dusk before dinner. To get there, tram 15E and the Cascais line train from Cais do Sodré leave you nearby. If you'd rather not think about transport after a long dinner, a transfer solves it.
