Loco

Modern cuisine · Estrela · €€€€

MICHELIN-starred modern cooking by chef Alexandre Silva, right next to the Estrela Basilica. For a long evening of unhurried tasting.

Loco is chef Alexandre Silva's restaurant and holds one MICHELIN star. It's in Estrela, a few steps from the basilica, in a quiet neighbourhood that seems in no hurry. It's the right place to see what contemporary Portuguese cooking is up to, and for that you need a whole evening.

The cooking: modern, with a Portuguese accent

Here you don't choose between steak and salt cod. Loco works with a tasting menu, a sequence of dishes chosen by the kitchen that changes with the seasons and with what arrives from the producers. The style is modern and creative, but with clearly visible Portuguese roots. We won't promise specific dishes, because the menu keeps changing. We'll only promise you'll taste things you won't find at the tasca on the corner.

If you have dietary restrictions or allergies, say so when you book. With a set menu, the kitchen appreciates knowing in advance.

The room and what to expect

The room is intimate, with few tables and the kitchen in the spotlight. That means attentive service and a leisurely pace. Expect a long meal: a tasting menu isn't dispatched in half an hour, so don't plan anything right afterwards. The price level is high (€€€€), in line with a MICHELIN star. As for clothes, dress as for a special night. If in doubt, ask when you book.

Estrela: fitting dinner into your day

Rua dos Navegantes is right by the Estrela Basilica, one of Lisbon's most beautiful churches, with the white dome you can see from half the city. Opposite is the Jardim da Estrela, great for a stroll before dinner, with a pond, huge trees and Lisbon families in Sunday mode. Tram 28 passes right by and links Estrela to the historic centre.

For a well-rounded day, start in the Baixa or Chiado, take the 28 to Estrela and stroll through the garden. Then explore the streets of Lapa, an elegant neighbourhood of mansions and embassies. If you're hungrier for markets than museums, head up to Campo de Ourique, which is close by and full of real neighbourhood life.
