MITSU is a Japanese restaurant on Rua Martens Ferrão, between Saldanha and Picoas, and is recommended by the MICHELIN Guide. The price level is €€€€, so it's a meal for those who take Japanese cooking seriously. It's in an area of offices and wide avenues, more local than touristy.
The cooking and the experience
The cooking is Japanese, in a fine-dining style, where the quality of the fish and precision are everything. What reaches the table depends a lot on the produce available, so it's best to take the team's advice. If you love sushi but have never tried the more refined side of Japanese cooking, this is a good place to take the leap. Mention any dietary restriction in advance.
At a Japanese restaurant of this level, the drinks matter too. Ask about options to go with the meal, whether sake or a fresh Portuguese wine. The team is usually the best help to get it right.
The room and what to expect
Expect a serene, refined atmosphere, typical of a high-end Japanese restaurant, where you eat calmly and talk without raising your voice. A good choice for a dinner for two or to impress someone who thinks they've tried all the sushi in Lisbon. Smart but relaxed clothes work well. Allow time for the meal, as this isn't food to rush.
Saldanha, Picoas and Avenidas Novas
Saldanha isn't a postcard neighbourhood, but it has plenty to see at a slow pace. The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, with its museum and garden, is a short walk away and deserves a whole afternoon. Closer by, Avenida da República has handsome old buildings and the Versailles pastry shop, an institution for coffee and cake.
If you prefer green, Parque Eduardo VII is also near, with its view down Avenida da Liberdade to the river. And the Saldanha and Picoas metro stations get you to the historic centre in a few minutes.
