O Talho is chef Kiko Martins's meat restaurant — the same chef behind A Cevicheria — and is recommended by the MICHELIN Guide. It's in Avenidas Novas, next to El Corte Inglés, and the concept is in the name ("talho" means butcher's): there's a butcher's shop at the entrance and a restaurant inside. For meat lovers, it doesn't get more direct.
The cooking and the experience
Meat is the star, in cuts handled with respect and prepared with the creative touch Kiko Martins brings to all his places. There are grills, of course, but also dishes showing that meat can go far beyond steak and chips. The idea is to make good use of the whole animal, with technique and no waste. Ask the team what's best that day and how you like it cooked.
Portuguese reds are the natural partners for this cooking, and the list offers good choices. If you're coming with someone who doesn't eat meat, check the menu beforehand.
The room and what to expect
Walking past the butcher's counter on the way to your table is half the job of whetting your appetite. The room has an urban, relaxed feel, with big-city restaurant energy, good for groups of friends and work dinners. The price level is €€€. No dress code: come as you are.
For groups, meat lends itself to sharing in the middle of the table, the best way to try more than one cut. If you're unsure about the cooking or the cut, the team explains without rushing.
Avenidas Novas around the table
Avenidas Novas are modern, flat Lisbon, with wide avenues and lots of shops. The area's star is the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, a few minutes' walk away: the museum has a remarkable collection and the garden is one of the city's calmest corners. Combining a morning at the Gulbenkian with lunch at O Talho is a very well-thought-out plan.
Right next door is El Corte Inglés for shopping, and Parque Eduardo VII, with its view down Avenida da Liberdade to the river, is a short walk away. From there, it's a pleasant stroll down the Avenida to the Baixa.
