Ofício is on Rua Nova da Trindade, in the middle of Chiado, and does something that never goes out of fashion in Lisbon: traditional Portuguese cooking done well. It has a MICHELIN Guide Bib Gourmand, the guide's way of saying "you eat very well here for a fair price". And it belongs to the Paradigma group, the same as Canalha, which already says a lot about its care for produce.
The cooking: home flavours, restaurant hands
The base is the Portuguese recipe book, the one any Lisbon local recognises at first bite. Don't expect wild reinventions or foams. Expect tradition treated with respect and technique. The menu changes, as it should in a kitchen working seriously with what's available, so there's no point arriving with a dish memorised. Come hungry and curious.
The name hides nothing: it's a Wine & Dining Room, and wine is part of the conversation. If you're unsure what to drink, ask. Portugal has grape varieties you won't find anywhere else, and a meal like this is the perfect excuse to get to know them.
The room and what to expect
The price level is €€ and the distinction is a Bib Gourmand. None of this points to starched tablecloths and church-like silence. Expect a relaxed meal with no formal dress code: the clothes you wore walking around Chiado are perfectly fine. Format and length depend on what you order and how long you want to stretch the conversation. If you're after a tasting menu or have a dietary restriction, check when you book.
The neighbourhood: all of Chiado on the doorstep
The location is one of the best for fitting into your day. Right next door is Largo do Carmo, with the ruins of the Carmo Convent, that open-air Gothic arch that survived the 1755 earthquake. A few minutes on foot take you to Praça Luís de Camões and the café A Brasileira, and from there down Rua Garrett to the Baixa.
If you're coming for dinner, first walk up to the São Pedro de Alcântara viewpoint to see the castle at dusk, or pass by the top of the Santa Justa Lift. After the meal, Bairro Alto is literally around the corner for anyone with legs left for a drink.
