Omakase Wa is a Japanese restaurant dedicated to the omakase format and is recommended by the MICHELIN Guide. It's hidden on Travessa do Fala-Só, a stone's throw from Avenida da Liberdade. The price level is €€€, which for this format makes it an interesting way in.
The cooking and the experience
Omakase means, roughly, "I leave it in your hands". Instead of choosing from a menu, you trust the chef, who serves a sequence of pieces throughout the meal as they're prepared. It's a format that lives on fish, well-seasoned rice and precise cutting, and it changes with the best the market has. So there's no point asking for last month's dish.
If there's anything you don't eat, say so when you book, not at the table, because the sequence is prepared in advance. And eat each piece as soon as it arrives: sushi doesn't like waiting for photos.
The room and what to expect
Omakase meals are intimate by nature, with few seats and a close connection with whoever is cooking. Expect a calm, focused atmosphere, more for watching than partying. Arrive on time, as the sequence usually starts for everyone together, and allow at least a couple of hours for the meal.
The Avenida and the hills around
Travessa do Fala-Só is on the side of Avenida da Liberdade closest to Bairro Alto, which is handy for a late afternoon on foot. Before dinner, ride the Glória funicular up from Restauradores and take in the São Pedro de Alcântara viewpoint, with the Castle opposite. You can also walk down the Avenida, with its shops and terraces, to Praça dos Restauradores and Rossio.
After the meal, Bairro Alto and Príncipe Real are close for a last drink. If you prefer something quieter, the Avenida at night is great for an after-dinner stroll.
