100 Maneiras is the flagship of chef Ljubomir Stanisic, born in Sarajevo and a Lisbon local by adoption. It's recommended by the MICHELIN Guide and hides on a narrow street in Bairro Alto, a few steps from the São Pedro de Alcântara viewpoint. It's for those who like a dinner with surprise, personality and a good dose of daring.
The cooking and the experience
The cooking is creative and very personal. It mixes memories of the Balkans with Portuguese produce and an obvious wish to provoke the diners. The meal is a tasting format, with several moments following each other like chapters in a book. No point trying to guess what comes next: better to trust and taste.
The wine pairing is a good way to follow the journey, with Portuguese labels and a few from abroad. If you have an allergy or dietary restriction, say so when you book, so the kitchen can prepare in time.
The room and what to expect
The room is small and cosy, with an atmosphere that's relaxed for this level of cooking. People talk and laugh, and nobody frowns at someone asking what they're eating. Expect a long dinner, so don't plan anything afterwards. It's a €€€€ restaurant, made for a special night rather than a hurried dinner.
As for clothes, something tidy but comfortable is enough. Shoes matter too: Bairro Alto's streets are cobbled and the climb up is no friend to high heels.
Bairro Alto around the table
Bairro Alto is quiet by day and lively at night. Before dinner, head to the São Pedro de Alcântara viewpoint, overlooking the Baixa and São Jorge Castle, especially at dusk. Coming from Avenida da Liberdade, you can ride up the Glória funicular, which drops you right at the viewpoint.
Nearby are the São Roque Church and Príncipe Real, with its garden, design shops and terraces. After dinner, Bairro Alto's alleys are full of bars for a last drink, and Chiado is five minutes downhill.
