BAHR is the Bairro Alto Hotel's restaurant, right on Praça Luís de Camões, between Chiado and Bairro Alto. It's recommended by the MICHELIN Guide and cooks Portuguese food with a modern feel. It's one of those addresses combining a good table, a great location and a certain Lisbon-hotel charm.
The cooking and the experience
The base is Portuguese: national produce, recognisable flavours and recipes handled with care and a light touch. It's neither grandma's cooking nor an ideas lab; it sits in a very pleasant middle ground. The menu follows the seasons, so ask what's best that day. To go with it, the wine list is a good showcase of what Portugal makes.
Service has the professionalism of a fine hotel, but without stiffness. If you have any dietary restriction, the team usually helps you choose.
The room and what to expect
The atmosphere is elegant and comfortable, with the calm of a hotel and the energy of the square just outside. It works well for a long lunch between walks or a dinner for two without much formality. The price level is €€€, so it's a good choice for treating yourself without going all the way to a tasting menu.
There's no strict dress code. Neat city clothes are enough, and nobody will mind if you come straight from a day of sightseeing.
Chiado and Bairro Alto on the doorstep
Hard to find a better starting point. Praça Luís de Camões is the border between elegant Chiado and bohemian Bairro Alto. A few steps away are Rua Garrett, the café A Brasileira with its Fernando Pessoa statue, and the Loreto and Encarnação churches.
For a river view, walk down to the Santa Catarina viewpoint, a few minutes away. Tram 28 passes through the square, and the Bica funicular is right next door to take you down to Cais do Sodré. At night, Bairro Alto starts on the street behind, for anyone wanting to keep the conversation going.
