José Avillez's two-MICHELIN-star restaurant in Chiado: creative cooking with Portuguese roots, served with flair a stone's throw from the São Carlos Theatre.

Belcanto is José Avillez's most emblematic restaurant — he is one of Portugal's best-known chefs — and it holds two MICHELIN stars. It sits in the heart of Chiado, right opposite the São Carlos National Theatre. If you want to see how far Portuguese cooking can go when someone takes it very seriously, this is the place.

The cooking and the experience

The cooking is creative but rooted in Portugal. Flavours you know from the sea, the hills and home kitchens come back reinvented, with sharp technique and a sense of humour. Expect dishes that surprise the eye before they surprise the palate. Menus change with the seasons and the chef's ideas, so it's best to arrive with an open mind and let yourself be guided.

Service is part of the show. The team explains what arrives at the table without turning it into a lecture, and the wine pairing is a great way to discover the best of what Portugal's vineyards are doing. If you have any dietary restrictions, mention them when you book.

The room and what to expect

The dining room is intimate and elegant, more serene than solemn. It's the kind of place where people speak softly, not because they have to, but because it feels right. Expect a tasting-style meal in several stages, so don't plan anything straight afterwards: this one deserves time and calm.

As for clothes, smart but relaxed is usually the safest choice. No tie needed, but leave the beach shorts at the hotel. It's a €€€€ restaurant, made for occasions worth remembering.

Chiado around the table

Belcanto is in one of Lisbon's prettiest and most walkable areas. Before dinner, stroll along Rua Garrett and Largo do Chiado, pass by the café A Brasileira and browse the old bookshops and shops. Right next door is Largo de São Carlos, with the opera house and the building where Fernando Pessoa was born.

A few minutes' walk away are the ruins of the Carmo Convent, the Santa Justa Lift and, heading downhill, the Baixa all the way to Praça do Comércio. For a sunset before your meal, climb to the São Pedro de Alcântara or Santa Catarina viewpoints. After dinner, Bairro Alto is just around the corner for anyone with energy left for a drink.
