Encanto proves that a MICHELIN-starred dinner doesn't need meat or fish to be memorable. It's the José Avillez Group's vegetarian restaurant — one of the best-known names in Portuguese cooking — and it sits on one of Chiado's prettiest squares. Come curious and hungry, even if you've never thought of having a "just vegetables" dinner.
Vegetables in the leading role
Here vegetables aren't a side. They're the heart of the plate, treated with fine-dining technique and the creativity you'd expect from a MICHELIN-starred house. The menu changes with the seasons and with what the land provides, so don't go looking for a particular dish: let yourself be surprised. If you're not vegetarian, this may be the best place in Lisbon to discover how far a kitchen without meat or fish can go.
What to expect at the table
We're at the top price level (€€€€), with attentive service and the pace of a great restaurant. Think of it as a long meal in several stages, not a quick dinner before the theatre. Allow time and don't rush. There's no public information on a strict dress code, but a smart look somewhere between relaxed and elegant fits well. If you have dietary restrictions, or want to confirm the meal format or expected length, mention it when you book.
A square with history in the heart of Chiado
Largo de São Carlos is dominated by the São Carlos National Theatre, Lisbon's opera house, and it's where Fernando Pessoa was born. A few steps away is Rua Garrett, with its bookshops, shops and the café A Brasileira, where Pessoa still sits outside in bronze. A good afternoon before dinner could take in the ruins of the Carmo Convent and Largo do Carmo, then the São Pedro de Alcântara viewpoint for sunset over the Baixa and the castle, before heading back down to Chiado. If you'd rather go towards the river, the Baixa and Praça do Comércio are a short walk downhill.
