Kanazawa proves you don't have to go to the centre to eat very well in Lisbon. It's in Restelo, a quiet residential neighbourhood above Belém, and holds a MICHELIN star for Japanese cooking done with rigour. If you love serious Japanese food, it's well worth the trip.
The cooking and the experience
Here Japanese cooking is approached with respect and precision, far from all-you-can-eat sushi. The focus is on produce, technique and the rhythm of the meal, with everything arriving at the right moment. The MICHELIN star says what matters: there's care in every detail. Menus change, so there's no point arriving with a dish in mind. Come curious and let yourself be guided.
The room and what to expect
Expect a calm, intimate atmosphere, more for quiet conversation than a birthday party with cake. We can't promise a strict dress code, but a smart look suits the place. Allow time: meals of this level aren't rushed through in half an hour, and rightly so. If you want to know whether there's a tasting menu, flag dietary restrictions or ask how long the meal lasts, do it when you book. Bookings are made by phone.
The neighbourhood: Restelo, with Belém next door
Restelo is the upper part of Belém: quiet streets, houses with gardens and little tourist bustle. Down below are all the classics: the Jerónimos Monastery, Belém Tower, the Monument to the Discoveries and the riverside gardens. A good plan is to spend the afternoon in Belém, with the compulsory stop for a pastel de nata, and head up for dinner as the sun starts to set.
If you have time and energy, the São Jerónimo Chapel, at the top of Restelo, offers a wide view over the Tagus and the 25 de Abril Bridge. The climb from the river is steep. After a day walking around Belém, a car or transfer to the door isn't luxury, it's common sense.
