Plano is in Graça, a hilltop neighbourhood with more neighbours than tourists, and is recommended by the MICHELIN Guide. Chef Vítor Adão leads the kitchen, with contemporary cooking rooted in Portugal. A good reason to climb up to one of the most genuine parts of Lisbon.
The cooking and the experience
The cooking is contemporary, but it doesn't forget where it comes from. Portuguese produce is at the centre, handled with technique and a little daring, and the flavours speak of land, sea and memory. The menu changes with the seasons and what arrives from producers. Best to come curious and let the team suggest the way.
To drink, Portuguese wines are the natural choice, with good finds from small producers. If you have any dietary restriction, mention it when you book.
The room and what to expect
The atmosphere is calm and intimate, far from the noise of the more touristy areas. It feels more like dinner at the home of someone who cooks very well than a ceremonious dining room. The price level is €€€, right for a special dinner without reaching the top of the scale. Allow time, as this is a meal to savour slowly.
There's no strict dress code. Come comfortable, and above all in shoes that can handle Graça's hills.
Graça around the table
Graça has two of Lisbon's best viewpoints. The Graça viewpoint, by the church, has a terrace and views of the Castle and the Baixa. A little higher up, Senhora do Monte is one of the city's highest points, perfect at sunset before dinner.
Tram 28 runs through the neighbourhood and links Graça to Alfama and the Baixa. Going down, you reach the São Vicente de Fora Monastery and the National Pantheon, and on Tuesdays and Saturdays the Feira da Ladra flea market fills Campo de Santa Clara. It's easy to combine an afternoon walk through Alfama and end the day at Plano's table.
