Terroir

Contemporary cooking recommended by the MICHELIN Guide, on Rua da Madalena between the Baixa and the Cathedral. A high-end dinner a few steps from Praça do Comércio.

Terroir is a contemporary restaurant on Rua da Madalena, the street climbing from the Baixa towards the Cathedral and the Castle. It's recommended by the MICHELIN Guide and plays in the top price bracket, €€€€. A good choice for ending a day of exploring the Baixa with a proper meal.

The cooking and the experience

The name gives a clue: terroir is the French word for the character that soil and climate give a product. The cooking is contemporary, with careful technique and attention to raw materials, and the idea is that the ingredient speaks louder than the garnish. The menu follows the seasons, so ask the team what's at its best that day. If you have any dietary restriction, say so when you book.

At a restaurant of this level, the wine deserves attention. Ask the team for suggestions; it's the simplest way to taste what Portugal's regions are doing well without deciphering the list alone.

The room and what to expect

Expect a meal designed to be enjoyed slowly, in a refined setting without too much ceremony. It's not a place for a rushed lunch between two monuments: allow time and let the conversation flow. Smart but comfortable clothes are the right call. A tie only if you feel like it.

The Baixa and the Castle hill

Rua da Madalena sits on the edge between the Pombaline Baixa and the old hills, which is great for fitting dinner into a day on foot. Before, stroll down Rua Augusta to the Arch and Praça do Comércio, or walk up to Lisbon Cathedral, a few minutes away. If your legs allow, carry on to the Santa Luzia and Portas do Sol viewpoints to see Alfama from above.

Tram 28 passes close by and is the classic way to reach São Jorge Castle without breaking a sweat. After dinner, the walk down to the river is short, and Praça do Comércio at night, lit up and calmer, is a lovely way to end the day.
