EPUR is one of those places you book ahead and look forward to. It has a MICHELIN star, creative cooking and chef Vincent Farges's signature, all on a discreet square in Chiado. If you're after a dinner to remember without leaving the centre, you're in the right place.
The cooking and the experience
Creativity is the watchword here, but the good kind: thoughtful, precise, no tricks to impress. Chef Vincent Farges's cooking lives on produce and technique, and dishes change with the seasons, so it's best to arrive without preconceptions. Don't expect the neighbourhood tasca or the classic salt cod with potatoes: expect clean flavours and combinations that make you think. The MICHELIN star says a lot about the level, but what you feel at the table is care from start to finish.
The room and what to expect
It's a €€€€ restaurant, and you notice it in the attentive service and the calm pace of the meal. We can't promise an official dress code, but smart casual is usually the right call in a place like this. With this kind of cooking the meal tends to be long, especially if you choose a menu in several stages. So don't plan anything straight afterwards. For menus, options and dietary restrictions, it's best to ask when you book: the team knows what's being served at the time.
Chiado around the table
The best way to reach EPUR is on foot. Start at Largo do Chiado and Rua Garrett, with their bookshops and historic cafés, and walk down to the São Carlos National Theatre or the Chiado National Museum of Contemporary Art, both right next door. If you have time before dinner, climb to the ruins of the Carmo Convent or take a look at the Santa Justa Lift. After the meal, the Baixa and Praça do Comércio are a short walk downhill, and Bairro Alto is right there for a last drink.
