Some dinners go in the diary weeks in advance, and this is one of them. The restaurant bearing chef Henrique Sá Pessoa's name holds two MICHELIN stars and sits in Páteo Bagatela, in a quieter corner of Avenidas Novas. If you want to see how far Portuguese cooking can go when someone starts playing with it, this is the place.
The cooking and the experience
The style is creative. It starts from Portuguese produce and memory but isn't trapped by tradition. The menu changes, so there's no point arriving with a dish in mind. What matters is the way of thinking: precise technique, clean flavours and a desire to surprise without putting on a show. Henrique Sá Pessoa is also the name behind Tapisco, and anyone who knows that more relaxed style will find the full-suit version here.
The room and what to expect
At two-star level, the usual format is a tasting menu, with several stages and a pace planned from start to finish. Check the format and options when you book, especially if you have dietary restrictions. Expect a long meal and keep the evening, or afternoon, free afterwards. On dress: we found no mention of a compulsory code, but a smart look without going overboard is always a safe bet at this level. Prices are at the top of the scale (€€€€), so come in a celebratory mood.
The neighbourhood: fitting the meal into your day
Páteo Bagatela sits where Avenidas Novas, Rato and Amoreiras meet. It isn't postcard Lisbon, and that's part of the charm. Before dinner you can walk up to Parque Eduardo VII for the view down Avenida da Liberdade to the river, or head down to Marquês de Pombal. On the Amoreiras side, the Águas Livres Aqueduct and the Mãe d'Água reservoir show that this city has always known how to build big. For a more cultural day, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, with its museum and garden, is a short ride away.
