Kabuki Lisboa is the Lisbon home of the Kabuki Group, a well-known name in Japanese cooking in Spain. Here, right on Rua Castilho, it earned a MICHELIN star. If you love serious Japanese cooking, with first-rate produce and great precision, it's well worth it.
The cooking: Japan with rigour
The foundation is Japanese: precise cuts, well-made rice, impeccable fish and clean flavours. Don't expect all-you-can-eat sushi. The pace is that of a starred restaurant, where every piece is thought through and served at the right moment. The menu changes with the produce and the season, so it's best to let the team guide you. If you have allergies or restrictions, mention them when you book, which always makes things easier for the kitchen.
The room and what to expect
The atmosphere is refined and calm, geared more towards conversation than partying. The price level is €€€: it's a dinner for special occasions, not for every day. We have no information about a formal dress code, but a tidy, smart-casual look always works at a place like this. Allow time: a MICHELIN-starred meal calls for calm, especially if you choose a sequence of several courses. Check the formats available on the day when you book.
The neighbourhood: between Marquês and Amoreiras
Rua Castilho is in an elegant, central area between Marquês de Pombal, Rato and Amoreiras. Before dinner, walk up to the top of Parque Eduardo VII to see the city sloping down to the river along Avenida da Liberdade. Close by, the Estufa Fria is a green refuge few people know about.
On the Amoreiras side is the small, charming Jardim das Amoreiras, with the arches of the Águas Livres Aqueduct and the Mãe d'Água reservoir. If your legs are still willing, Príncipe Real, with its shops and garden, is a pleasant walk away. That way the meal fits nicely at the end of an afternoon wandering the centre.
