YŌSO

Japanese (omakase) · Lapa / Necessidades · €€€€

MICHELIN-starred omakase in Lapa: sit down, trust the chef and let the Japanese meal unfold, piece by piece, next to Necessidades.

YŌSO is the place where you choose nothing, and that's exactly the point. Japanese cooking in omakase format, with a MICHELIN star, hidden on a quiet slope between Lapa and Necessidades. For anyone who loves serious Japanese food, it's one of Lisbon's dinners worth putting in the diary.

Omakase: the chef chooses, you enjoy

Omakase means, roughly, "I leave it in your hands". In practice, the meal is a sequence decided by the kitchen, following the best of what's available that day. Don't expect a fixed menu to memorise: what reaches the table changes with the season and the produce. The MICHELIN star says the rest about the level of rigour. Come curious and unhurried, because that's what this format asks for.

The room and what to expect

This is a tasting experience, not a quick dinner before the theatre. Expect several courses and keep the evening free, with no tight plans afterwards. We can't promise a dress code, but a smart look without overdoing it fits a restaurant of this level. Prices are at the top of the scale (€€€€), so think of it as the special dinner of your trip. If you have allergies or dietary restrictions, mention them when you book: with a menu decided by the kitchen, it makes all the difference.

Lapa and Necessidades: the neighbourhood around

Lapa is the Lisbon of embassies, mansions and quiet streets, far from the bustle of the Baixa. Right next door is the pink and imposing Necessidades Palace, and behind it the Tapada das Necessidades, a historic garden great for a walk before dinner. Not far away is the National Museum of Ancient Art, on Rua das Janelas Verdes, with a garden facing the Tagus where late afternoon feels wonderful. With more time, head up to the Estrela Basilica and garden, or down towards Santos and Alcântara. An afternoon of museum and garden followed by omakase makes a fine day in Lisbon.
